The metaphor that will be discussed in the most depth will be the overarching orientational metaphor tying the myth of Dedalus and Icarus with the persistent up/down themes and motifs placed throughout the text. By pulling various passages from the novel and performing a close reading, I hope to show how Joyce casts a plethora of thematic binaries into these orientational categories. He consistently divides experiences and objects in Stephen’s surroundings into such oppositional categories as good and evil, health and illness, control and subjugation. With this research, I propose that by using the understanding of conceptual metaphor constructed by Lakoff and Johnson in their book, Metaphors We Live By (1980), we can see Stephen’s desire for artistic ascent echoes the physical ascent of Dedalus and Icarus. Joyce consistently uses the generic-level orientational metaphor UP VS. DOWN to illustrate Stephen as the “avatar” of Icarus (Singleton 307). This paper will also discuss Joyce’s use of metaphor in exemplifying the role that hands play in projecting authority, as well as the metaphors concerning the connection between light and consciousness, understanding, and control, and conversely, the link between darkness and intellectual poverty. In addressing these metaphorical constructions, I hope to elucidate Stephen’s place in the spectrum of subjugation and authority.
